Wordful Wednesday - Learning about Death

Well, as you know our oldest is 10 and he knows what death IS but he really doesn't understand it or didn't until this past weekend.

I was cleaning up the kitchen and went to take the trash out to the garage and as I was coming back in I saw what I thought was a really big mouse sitting just outside the door into my house. After nearly jumping out of my skin I realized that it was actually a very tiny baby bunny. They run wild in the area that we live in so I wasn't all that surprised to see it. What did surprise me was that it didn't make a move to run away from me and when I called the kids to come see him he didn't even flinch when my son picked him up. Right then I knew something wasn't right. I had a feeling that our cat had gotten a hold of him.
I told my son to take it out to the yard and we would see if he ran away. Maybe he was just scared and didn't know how to get out of the garage? Well, he didn't move and me being the animal lover decided to take it to the local vet. It was about 8 pm and I knew that there was only one open near us. When we got there we found out that their doctor is deathly allergic to rabbits and couldn't help us! We were on our own.
We took him home and tried a dropper to give him some water and borrowed some guinea pig food from the neighbor. But the poor thing wouldn't do a thing. He was very lethargic and fading fast. My son was heart broken and I tried to explain it the best that I could. "That's nature, maybe he's sick and not meant to live". I showed him how his breathing was slowing down and that we shouldnt touch him because we didnt know if he was is pain. It was so sad to see my son so confused and angry and upset.
He wanted it to sleep in his room but I wouldn't let him because of the cat. We put him in a shoe box with some warm towels, food and water but it died a few hours later. My son cried himself to sleep that night and I felt so bad for him.

He now understands the true meaning of death.
Well now that I have made you cry :) Head on over to Seven clown Circus and read some more Wordful Wednesday posts! Hopefully you can find something to make you laugh now.

  1. oh! It is so sad :( Little baby bunnies should be immune from death... sigh... I bought my kids a betta fish in Cairo. I'd seen it in a tiny cement block shack/petshop next to a RR and the kids had been so good on their first day of school. I generally do not approve of pets as gifts, but figured the fish would have a better life! I could not even find betta food locally (they need protein) so I fed him meat from our dinners. I thought he'd not last, that perhaps his eventual death might gently introduce the kids to the concept ... but, 2 years later, that (spoiled) fish had outlived both of our elderly cats, and was given to friends when we left. So much for that lesson. (He was an awesome fish! Wish we could have kept him.) I guess the positive thing, is to know that your kids have gentle and very loving hearts... even if it hurts bad enough to cry to sleep sometimes.

  2. My dogs dig up the nests in my gardens every spring. Drives me nuts! Once you touch them the mother won't come back to feed them.

    Have a great day!

  3. Awwww! That is so sad! We have wild rabbits around here, too - I'm always afraid the dogs will end up getting one, but they've been smart and build their nests outside the invisible fence. ;)

  4. Our kids go through those things, don't they? But he is lucky to have a mom like you to support him through the experience.

  5. Very sad. I too am a animmal lover....I've been known to save mice from snakes. At least you know your son will be as loving as you towards animals (:

  6. Both our pet bunnies died over the past year. The girls took it surprisingly well.
Hope your little guy is doing ok.

...oh, and I have a wild baby bunny story involving my cat. The end result was, uhm.. bloodier than this incident. It wasn't pretty.

  7. The first photograph looks like a chipmunk.

  8. So sad, poor your son and poor baby bunny. I am a little What?? that the vet was allergic to rabits!

  9. Very sad! It's awful to see your kids have to learn the hard lessons. How can a vet be allergic to bunnies?! Shouldn't that sort of disqualify you?

  10. Nice blog you got here... Just droppin' by to say hi!

  11. Oh no... How sad. I'm so sorry he didn't make it. We've had to discuss that "it's nature's way" thing around here once or twice before, too. It's never fun.

And what kind of fool who is allergic to bunnies becomes a vet?! That makes no sense to me.
